Year 1
In Year 1 the children start to follow the National Curriculum. The curriculum is planned and delivered to ensure continuity and progression from the Early Years into the Key Stage 1 (KS1). Teaching and learning will take place through a blend of whole class, group and independent activities using both the classroom and the outside environment. Year R teachers pass on information about each child's learning and development to ensure a successful transition into Year 1.
Children continue to have daily phonics lessons, as well as daily maths and English. Foundation subjects are taught throughout the week to ensure that children recieve a broad and balanced curriculum. Topic themes allow learning to have purposeful links and engaging contexts.
During their Space topic the children discovered that a spaceship had crash landed in our courtyard!
The children asked questions and thought about who might have been in the spaceship, using their imaginations.
The Wonderdome planetarium visited school and Year 1 learned about the planets and what it is like up in space.
Use of the outdoor environment is such a big aspect of the Early Years and it is something we continue into Key Stage 1. We utilise our school grounds and the local area to provide real life, engaging opportunities to explore, investigate and apply knowledge.
Supporting your child:
The best way that you can support your child is to read with them regularly at home. This includes reading the decodable phonics books that are sent home as well as sharing stories at home, such as their library book or other books you have at home.
We send out weekly home learning which can be accessed here.
Our curriculum pages detail the knowledge and skills for each subject. Also, the links below will help you to know what is taught in Year 1 and the expectations.
